Skomer Woodwork is based in Barry Community Enterprise Centre where it provides training opportunities in woodwork skills to trainees from the Vale. Skomer, like its close partner, Fieldway Woodwork, also produces a wide range of handmade and assembled wooden products for the home and garden.
Trainees attend Skomer from 9am-3pm
Trainees in Skomer Woodwork learn the basics of carpentry, joinery and furniture assembly. The skills are taught at levels to suit a range of abilities. Through making a variety of products, the trainees are taught how to use and care for a range of hand and power tools. There is also a strong emphasis on teaching correct health and safety procedures, as well as a range of ways to apply different finishes to wood.
A person centred training plan is developed for each trainee

Skomer has built up links with a number of local businesses to source reclaimed timber. The workshop strives to work ethically and to use reclaimed and second use timber wherever it is available. It also focuses on using water based wood stains and finishes where appropriate, but will also use traditional wood preservatives on outdoor furniture where required.
