V21 Pottery @ Fairwater

Our V21 Pottery @ Fairwater project is a therapeutic, hands-on creative space. Depending on the day, trainees are supported by Kylie, Mary, Emma or Elen, each bringing their own friendly guidance and skills. Trainees get hands-on making all kinds of ceramic items, learning new techniques, trying out ideas, and creating pieces to be proud of, all while enjoying the calming process of working with clay.

The studio looks out onto our beautiful community garden, where trainees can take a break or find inspiration from nature to use in their work. The pottery takes up to 12 placements and is a favourite project for our volunteers, so there’s always someone around to chat to or work alongside, creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Learning follows the individual strengths and interests of each trainee, covering skills like…

  • Designing in 2D, drawing and creating surface patterns.
  • Constructing clay products.
  • Applying coloured slip, stain, underglaze and glaze.
  • Firing, kiln and reclaiming skills.
  • Creating glass art.
  • Learning about artists and art techniques.
  • Slip casting.
  • Throwing pottery.
  • Using tools and machinery safely.
  • Controlling the quality of work for sale.
